To connect to a wireless network for the first time, select the network bySSID in the Choose a Wireless Network list. Formore information about why a wireless network would operate with this kind ofstealth, see Chapter 18. You should know that some wireless stations (also called Access Points orAPs) do not broadcast their SSID (usually for reasons of security). There’s nothing intrinsic to stop you from connecting to one of thesenetworks, but you need to know the SSID-it won’t show up in theChoose a Wireless Network list no matter how many times you click Refresh. (Apple calls the SSIDs used by its AirPortwireless products its AirPort ID.) The SSID is also sometimes called a network name or a wireless network name. The SSID is used to identify the "station" broadcastinga Wi-Fi signal. Wireless networks are listed by SSID, service setidentifier. Just like a cell phone, the more bars, the stronger thesignal.įigure 3.12 Choose aWireless Network shows all wireless networks within range and indicates signalstrength with green bars. The strength of the signal from each wireless network isindicated by green bars. If you want to rescan forwireless signals, perhaps because you’ve moved your laptop to a newlocation, click the Refresh Network List command under Network Tasks on the topleft of the window. When you click the View Wireless Networks button, your computer scans thearea for Wi-Fi signals and displays the wireless networks it finds in the Choosea Wireless Network dialog shown in Figure3.12. Depending on your needs and preferences, you mighteven find that the alternative DMU is easier to use than Windows. But if you choose to use a vendor’sutility-called a device management utility, or DMU-rather thanWindows XP to configure your wireless settings, you should know that it will setmore or less the same things. I’ve chosen to emphasize using Windows to configure wireless networksettings because that way everything works in a standard way, and I can be surethat it will work on your Windows XP laptop that uses Intel Centrino mobiletechnology no matter what its brand.
